The BEST Sugar Cookies

I know you’ve heard it before, but I’m serious. These are the BEST sugar cookies. I don’t even look at sugar cookie recipes anymore. This one has yet to be topped.  My husband brought the recipe into the marriage. It originated from a teacher when he was growing up. In his opinion, a life-changing event when he was brave enough to ask for the recipe and she actually gave it to him. It’s our family’s favorite cookie.

The secret is the cream cheese and almond extract. It’s best to make the cookies a tad on the thicker side. The key is to not let them brown before you take them out of the oven. We like them with cream cheese frosting or just plain with sprinkles. You’ll thank me later.

Cream Cheese Sugar Cookies
1 cup butter, softened
1 (8 oz) package cream cheese, softened
3 ⅓ cups flour
1 ½ cups sugar
1 egg
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp vanilla extract
½ tsp almond extract

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Beat butter and cream cheese in a large bowl on medium to high speed until thoroughly blended. Add the egg and both extracts. Beat until combined. Add half the flour, sugar and baking powder. Beat. Add remaining flour, sugar and baking powder. You may need to use your hands to thoroughly combine dough. Divide dough in half. Cover both halves and chill in the refrigerator for 1 ½ hours. On a lightly-floured surface, roll one portion of dough at a time to desired thickness (we do at least ¼-inch thick). Use cookie cutters to cut into desired shapes. Place on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake 7-10 minutes (watch carefully). Remove from pans to cooling rack. When cooled completely, decorate.
