Cub Scout Pinewood Derby 2015

One of the highlights of Cub Scouts for my boys is the annual Pinewood Derby races. Last weekend was our sixth year of pinewood derby madness.

Craig and the boys work for weeks stealing time here and there to design and create their cars. Craig is far more patient with the kids than I am. He’ll painstakingly explain again and again proper tool uses and techniques. He’s always willing to try just about any crazy idea the boys can imagine.

The boys aren’t interested in making the cars aerodynamic to win races. Winning isn’t their priority so much as taking a vision from their imagination and making it a reality. If I was the primary adult support for the car-making process, I would have nixed the cab. Seriously, Craig is a glutton for punishment. I’ll admit that there have been years when I don’t think the cars will turn out, but I’ve always been pleasantly surprised.

Pinewood Derby 2015 for our house showcased a popcorn box car and a yellow taxi cab. The popcorn box was fairly straight forward. I think C may have picked it because he knew it wouldn’t take quite as long to make. J’s taxi cab was labor intensive. The idea for that came out of our Hot Wheels collection.

This year we made the trophy’s for the Open Class races. I found several ideas on Pinterest for trophies made from wood and spray painted Hot Wheels cars. We didn’t follow any specific directions but took the basic idea and made our own using scraps of wood. The most time consuming part of the process was searching through the shelves at Wal-Mart to find three identical Hot Wheels cars. There were so many cars, and I was sidetracked numerous times by cars I thought the boys needed for their personal Hot Wheels collection. The trophies were a Pinterest success though, and that’s not something that happens a lot in this house.

The boys are already making plans for 2016. Watch out Craig.
